30 May 2007 'Don't give your number to thieves' warn police

Hertfordshire police are warning people in the area to take precautionary measures to make sure their registration plate is not stolen, it has been reported.

According to the Welwyn & Hatfield Times, the plates account for 13 per cent of all the items which are stolen from vehicles every year - a number only surpassed by satellite navigation crime statistics.

But the problem, which could compromise a car insurance policy, is preventable, according to county crime reduction officer Andy Reynolds.

For example, attaching the plate with special clutch head screws can "save inconvenience later".

"Drivers can easily protect their vehicles from this type of theft," he said.

Meanwhile, the Home Office has released statistics regarding vehicle crime in the UK.

While there were 1.7 million vehicle-related thefts during 2005 to 2006, the activity has gone down by 51 per cent since 1997.
