30 May 2007 Advanced driving lessons 'could be life-saving'

Young motorists have been advised to consider taking a Pass Plus course to improve their driving skills, something which could in turn result in lower car insurance costs.

The North-West Evening Mail has suggested that a 17-year-old male with a new driving licence is 700 per cent more likely to have an accident than anybody else on the road.

It added that in Cumbria, 14 people under 20 died in collisions last year - an amount close to a quarter of the total UK number.

According to Safer Roads for Cumbria, completing a Pass Plus course could protect a young motorist when they first take to the road.

"Pass Plus is more than a bolt-on addition to the standard driving test," a representative said.

An investigation into drink-driving and young people from Radio One's Newsbeat highlighted Leicestershire, Strathclyde and Northumbria, as well as Cumbria, as problem areas.
