29 May 2007 Holidaying homeowners 'should get suitable insurance'

People looking to go on holiday this summer should take out an adequate home insurance policy in order to protect their dwellings, it has been reported.

Figures from the Belfast Telegraph show that £2.3 billion is paid each year in order to cover the repair bill after a burglary - a realisation as many as 2.5 million holiday returnees have had to face up to over the last decade.

The source added that 600,000 people have had their houses vandalised in their absence, while close to 700,000 and 100,000 have had trouble with storm and fire damage respectively.

"Almost half of all burglaries happen when a flat or a house is empty, so make your home look like someone is living in it," a Home Office spokesperson commented.

People living in Wiltshire may be interested to hear that the Gazette Reporter has claimed that Swindon is the second safest town in the UK when it comes to burglaries.

In first place was Guildford.
