29 May 2007 Driving without insurance fine slammed
A driver found to be on the road without car insurance could receive a fine of £137 - an amount slammed by a road safety campaigner, it has been reported. The Liverpool Daily Post has claimed that the cost for illegal motorist covers only a fraction of an annual policy bill - no incentive for the 100,000 people driving without cover to get it.
Furthermore, the price of being caught without car insurance has dropped since 2000, with 7,813 convicted and given a £207 fine.
And Paul Smith, of campaign group Safe Speed, stated: "Where is the incentive to get insurance, at a cost of hundreds of pounds a year, if you … walk away with a fine that is a fraction of the cost of the insurance?"
This week, Mr Smith criticised the police after Daily Mail figures showed that one in 200 officers is punished for driving over the speed limit while on duty, according to Clitheroe Today.
