25 May 2007 Researchers make hydrogen breakthrough

Scientists have made a new discovery in storing hydrogen which could mean that eco-friendly cars become far more widespread.

A team of researchers from the Universities of Birmingham and Oxford and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory have created a lithium compound which could enable cars to store enough hydrogen to power a fuel cell car for 300 miles.

Professor Peter Edwards of the University of Oxford said: "This work could make a key contribution to helping fuel cell cars become viable for mass-manufacture within around ten years."

While such a development may help to reduce carbon emissions, it may also have an effect upon a motorist's car insurance.

In related news, Experian recently reported that although overall car sales fell by 0.8 per cent in 2006, the sales of "gas guzzlers" – vehicles which tend to pollute more – actually increased.

Kirk Fletcher, managing director of the firm's automotive division, said that despite the criticism aimed at such vehicles, people have not been deterred from buying them.
