25 May 2007 Manchester considers road charges
In addition to paying road tax and motor insurance, drivers in Manchester may soon be required to pay new road charges.Greater Manchester's Transport Innovation Fund is set announce new plans to introduce a congestion charge for private vehicles driving into the city, the BBC reports.
Chris Fletcher, policy director at Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, told the news provider that although the plans have not been finalised, other initiatives should be considered as well.
"Look at things like local travel pans, how employees can get to work more effectively, flexible working – there's a whole range of opportunities," he remarked.
Rochdale Council leader Alan Taylor argued that although the council is not in favour of introducing charges to tackle congestion if it can show "clear benefits" for the local population it should be considered.
Mr Taylor said that in order to implement the plans, they should receive the backing of local businesses and the public.
