23 May 2007 Four out of ten still flout phone ban
Some 40 per cent of motorists in the UK are still using their mobile phones while on the road, it has been reported.According to Which?, 33 per cent of those surveyed revealed that they had made or received a call while driving in the last year.
A further 32 per cent admitted to sending a text on the road over the same period of time.
Still, nine out of ten responded that they are aware of the new punishments they could receive for doing so - a £60 fine and a three-point licence deduction.
Similarly, a car insurance policy may also be affected.
"The penalties for using a handheld phone when driving are now stiffer, but to be effective the government must change driver behaviour through better education as well as enforcement," said Richard Headland, Which? motoring editor.
In 2006, there were 3,150 killed in road accidents across the UK, according to the Department for Transport.
