22 May 2007 MPs to vote on road pricing for the first time
Draft legislation which would pave the way for the government's road pricing scheme to be introduced will come before the Commons today. The proposals will outline plans to give local authorities the power to charge for the use of the roads if they wish, according to the Guardian.
And the bill comes despite stiff opposition from 1.8 million Britons who signed a petition against the plans on the 10 Downing Street website earlier this year.
Some motorists may consider road charges too steep a price to pay alongside road tax and car insurance.
But Liberal Democrat transport spokesman Alistair Carmichael commented that the possibility of cutting congestion may outweigh the extra cost.
"If the public feel that road user pricing is just another cash cow for the Treasury, then it will meet stiff resistance and a real opportunity to reduce congestion will be missed," he said.
Road pricing may also be seen as an environmental measure.
According to the World Development Movement, the UK currently emits 564 million tonnes of CO2 each year.
