22 May 2007 Drug-driving campaign drops in to Portsmouth
A new campaign against drug-driving will target clubbers in Portsmouth.Across the city, 25,000 beer mats and 2,500 posters will highlight the dangers of the activity with the slogan: "Drug-driving … you'd be off your head."
A drug-driving offence may also have an affect on getting a future car insurance policy at a cheap rate.
The initiative will be launched on Wednesday May 23rd - National Tackling Drugs Day - and Portsmouth City Council's road safety and drug action teams will be joined by Hampshire police outside the University of Portsmouth Students' Union in order to raise awareness.
"The problem isn't any worse in Portsmouth than in other areas, but we need people to take this issue seriously," said Councillor Paula Riches, the council's executive member for community safety.
"It carries the risk of some serious penalties, including prison," she warned.
Meanwhile, figures from the Department for Transport show that 3,150 people died on UK roads in 2006.
