18 May 2007 Public transport 'forces cars off city centre roads'
Measures put in place to make public transport more popular have seen motorists in Glasgow forced off a busy street, it has been reported. From Monday 21st May 2007, cars will not be able to turn right from West George Street towards Renfield Street, reported the Glasgow Evening Times.
The local paper added that this has been done in the hope of cutting congestion and encouraging people onto public transport.
It may also be that motorists who use their cars less as a result will save money on their car insurance premium.
And a spokeswoman for the city council added that there may be a few teething problems as the scheme comes into being.
"There may be delays and disruption until everyone becomes familiar with the new route," she said.
The council came under-fire from motorists in Glasgow after the time on some parking meters was not updated to British Standard Time - meaning they had to pay for an extra hour.
