18 May 2007 Homeowners 'should put plants on home insurance'
People planning on doing some work in the garden this summer should look into the possibility of getting their plants covered on their home insurance policy, it has been claimed. While some home insurance deals do pay out on garden damage up to the value of £500, moneysupermarket.com has commented that serious horticulturalists should seek out more stringent cover.
This may also apply to people who have expensive gardening equipment or children's play areas set up, according to Richard Mason, the website's director of insurance.
"If you do leave the latest lawnmower or other valuable items in your garden, these may be easy targets for thieves or vandals and you should look to get additional cover on your insurance," he said.
The onset of summer will see Britain experience longer days and shorter nights, which may provide greater opportunities for burglars to break into a property.
