16 May 2007 Northern Ireland government 'may consider young driver curfew'
Officials in Northern Ireland may look to introduce a curfew for young drivers in an effort to reduce accidents in the country, it has been reported.Belfast Today states that the Department of the Environment plans to propose the idea that new and inexperienced motorists are kept off roads in the Province between 23:00 and 06:00 BST in the upcoming Road Safety Review.
This may be appealing to young drivers, in that a reduction in accidents could lead to a lower motor insurance policy.
Furthermore, the decision would be supported by UK road safety charity Brake, with a spokeswoman claiming a curfew could cut incidents.
"Urgent measures are needed to improve the road safety of young drivers. Brake would like to see the introduction of graduated licensing to help prevent the tragic deaths of teenagers on our roads," said Dianne Ferreira.
The Department for Transport has released statistics showing that 3,150 people died on UK roads during 2006, compared to 3,201 in 2005.
