16 May 2007 Naming and shaming in store for rogue drivers

Motorists found to be using their mobile phones while driving will be publicly shamed as part of a new police initiative, it has been reported.

According to the Liverpool Daily Post, officers will film people driving and chatting at the same time, distributing the images to local newspapers in an attempt to embarrass offending drivers.

Many drivers may also be disturbed by the higher car insurance premium that may be awaiting them if they commit the crime.

It is hoped that this will play a part in deterring the activity, with the constabulary keen to stigmatise the offence in a similar way to drink-driving, it added.

"There are still too many who do not view this as a serious offence," said Superintendent Mark Matthews.

"[It] significantly reduces your reaction time and significantly increases your chances of being involved in a crash."

New legislation, docking drivers three points and giving them a £60 fine for driving on the phone, was introduced on February 27th 2007.
