15 May 2007 Reckless young men 'make safe roads dangerous'

Young men taking to the road and driving recklessly are making safe roads in Yorkshire dangerous, it has been claimed.

The West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership has commented that people in the region are more likely to suffer an accident on a straight road in a 30mph area than anywhere else in the country, Leeds Today has reported.

Examining 7,162 car crashes, the organisation found the behaviour of reckless young men to be responsible for many of them, as well as for the increase of annual road deaths in the county from 99 to 113, it added.

And it may be that this affects the cost of car insurance for new drivers.

"There were no other common factors that can be linked … the rise in deaths was as a result of dangerous behaviour by a reckless minority of young, male drivers," said Phillip Gwynne, spokesman for the partnership.

Nationally, the Department for Transport revealed that there were 3,201 deaths on the road during 2005.
