11 May 2007 Calls for rural drivers to slow down
Police in Scotland have launched a campaign in order to reduce the number of deaths on rural roads, it has been reported.According to the BBC, 70 per cent of fatal accidents occur on highways in the country - with speeding to blame.
As a result, the Rural Road Awareness campaign has been set up by constabularies nationwide in an effort to crack down on speeders and subsequently save lives, it added.
In addition, it may also be that the scheme causes a reduction in the price of car insurance policies in such areas.
"There can be no doubt about the dangers of excessive and inappropriate speed, especially on rural roads," said chief constable John Vine of Tayside Police.
Last month, a high-ranking official of the same constabulary backed harsher fines for drivers using mobile phones.
According to Stv.tv, Inspector Gordon Taylor is behind introducing increased penalties for these "irresponsible drivers".
