10 May 2007 Summertime 'not easy for dangerous drivers'

Larne borough drivers who decide to risk their car insurance as well as other people's by speeding can expect no mercy from police, it has been reported.

Tackling the issue is one of the constabulary's two main areas of focus over the coming season, with chief superintendent Will Kerr claiming that cars do not kill - people do, Larne Today has revealed.

The official claimed that the district's coastline would attract tourists and see the area's population bolstered over the coming months - potentially increasing the accident rate, he added.

And Mr Kerr has stressed that a no mercy, no-nonsense method is the best policy when it comes to cutting deaths.

"We make no apology for that approach and if it saves even one life it has been worth it," he said.

Speeding drivers may not be the only threat to car insurance policies this summer.

New legislation regarding mobile phone use behind the wheel may see many drivers pulled up, fined and subsequently left in a difficult position when it comes time to renew.
