09 May 2007 Vehicle retrieval 'may cost £150'

Motorists in the UK may be looking at a rise in their car insurance premium in the wake of the government's £150 charge to recover a stolen or broken-down vehicle, it has been reported.

In addition to this, thisislondon.co.uk has stated that drivers could also be subjected to a £20 per day fine depending on the amount of time the car is in storage.

According to the Home Office, premiums may actually increase because of this, meaning any amount that can be reclaimed may be a drop in the ocean for motorists.

The shadow home secretary, David Davis, has said that this decision "takes the biscuit".

"It's bad enough that so many are falling victim to vehicle crime due to this government's failing policies."

Statistics released by the Home Office show that while vehicle crime has dropped 51 per cent since New Labour came into power, around 1.7 million related thefts were reported during 2005 and 2006.
