09 May 2007 Tesco 'paid £8 million' for faulty fuel

Supermarket giant Tesco has revealed the amount of compensation it has issued to drivers hit by the petrol crisis earlier in the year, it has been reported.

According to the Sun, the company paid out £8 million to 18,000 motorists whose cars were affected when silicone contaminated gasoline at various forecourts across the south-east in March.

It added that drivers forked out repair costs from £200 to £1,000 to fix the problems - most of which occurred by damage to emissions regulator sensors, while some may have seen their car insurance policy also suffer as a result.

And Patricia Sample, of Newbourne in Suffolk, has claimed that she was pleased with how Tesco dealt with her complaint.

"I got the whole amount I asked for," she told the national newspaper.

In the wake of the crisis, the supermarket chain printed a double-page advertisement in most national newspapers in which it stated that it would like to pay for any damage caused.
