08 May 2007 Rat-run fears at Hampshire service station
A new set of traffic lights at a Hampshire motorway junction has lead to fears of a rat-run being established, it has been reported.According to the Southern Daily Echo, desperate drivers looking to jump the queue are using Rownhams services as a new lane in order to cut out a mile and a half of traffic.
Some 282 motorists have signed a petition calling on the Highways Agency to have the lights removed.
And one worker at Roadchef services has claimed that many varieties of vehicle are heading through the rat-run in order to shave time off their journeys although they may risk their car insurance policy in doing so.
"We've got container trucks, supermarket trailers, you name it, you've got it. Even the police are coming through," the anonymous employee said.
Last month, an entire street in Hull signed a petition to bring in traffic-calming measures, after their road became a popular rat-run for drivers.
