02 May 2007 Commute 'may be bad for health'

The sanctions in place for drivers caught using their mobile phones behind the wheel may not be enough to deter the problem, it has been reported.

While 83 people in the area were given a £60 fine and a licence point endorsement for the act in March, Bolton police inspector Chris Burrows has claimed that the punishments have had little effect, according to the Bolton News.

The official added that he was disheartened by the amount of people still willing to risk serious injury - or even death - in order to make a phone call.

"It's very disappointing that [the laws] have had very little effect of the number of drivers who are willing to risk their lives and those of others," he said.

Car insurance customers should be aware that the new punishments are in full effect now, having been introduced by the Department for Transport on February 27th 2007.
