01 May 2007 Petrol prices 'causing one in five to change habits'

Some twenty per cent of people have claimed that climbing petrol prices have resulted in them changing their driving habits, according to a new survey.

American Express (Amex) has stated that increases in the price of fuel has seen many switch to a more eco-friendly car, Mirror.co.uk has reported.

Similarly, people are choosing to simply drive less, it added.

However, drivers are not choosing to seek out relevant car insurance to accommodate their change of heart, with Amex claiming that less than half (40 per cent) of the UK's 33 million motorists opt to do so.

And Joanne Field, Amex marketing manager, has stated that car insurance is one area of vehicle maintenance where people can really save some money.

"The cost of motoring seems to rise year-on-year … [while] there is little motorists can do to cut the cost of fuel or road tax, insurance is one area where real savings can be made," she said.

Gordon Brown's 11th Budget in March saw the chancellor increase fuel duty in addition to the cost of road tax for those driving gas-guzzling vehicles.
