01 May 2007 Reckless young drivers have 'disappeared'
Road safety laws intended to curb young people driving dangerously may have resulted in some of them dropping off the police radar completely, it has been reported.According to the Times, the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) has reported that 40,000 young motorists may be continuing to take to the road despite being disqualified under the New Drivers Act.
In many cases, they will be behind the wheel without a licence or car insurance, it added.
And the council revealed while 62,000 drivers were taken off the road under the sanctions, only 29,000 regained their licence.
Rob Gifford, PACTS director, believes these "disappearing" motorists may still be driving.
"There is strong evidence that many thousands of novice drivers disqualified through the New Drivers Act are continuing to drive unlicensed," he said.
Not only can a motorist without a licence illegally escape speeding fines if caught by a gatso, but it may prove difficult for a responsible motorist to claim car insurance from them in the event of a collision.
