30 April 2007 Dirty road signs 'could kill'

Drivers in the UK could be at risk if they cannot make out dirty or obscured road signs, it has been reported.

Similarly, an accident due to a faulty placard could compromise a car insurance policy.

In response, Autonational Rescue has urged local authorities to begin a spot of spring cleaning in order to get the signage up to scratch, according to 24dash.com.

The breakdown company has claimed that the problem was caused by a build-up of dirt and grime accrued over the winter period, although spouting vegetation was also cited.

And Ronan Hart, the organisation's marketing manager, has made it clear that the problem could cost lives.

"Road signs are designed to warn motorists of hazards and when dirty they aren't easily seen, especially at night," he said.

A similar problem with signage has cropped in Shropshire, according to the Shropshire Star.

The body has claimed that 20 signs have been stolen in recent weeks.
