25 April 2007 Young drivers 'think they're safe'
Most young drivers believe they are safe and responsible when they get behind the wheel, according to new research.Breakdown specialist Green Flag and road safety group Brake conducted a poll of motorists aged 17 to 24 and found that 55 per cent thought they were not dangerous on the road, Easier has reported.
Further research found that 69 per cent of people would like to see restrictions introduced to control the number of passengers young motorists can carry.
Such regulations may have an affect on the cost of a young person's car insurance policy.
However, almost a third of the young drivers surveyed claimed to know someone who frequently drives after taking illegal drugs - one of many road safety issues a Brake spokesperson would like to see addressed.
"It is high time UK and world leaders made making roads safe a top priority," said Jools Townsend, head of education for the company.
This week is UN Global Road Safety Week - which runs until April 29th 2007.
