25 April 2007 Van drivers unite for cyclist safety scheme
The fabled war between motorists and cyclists may be over thanks to a new road safety scheme from Transport for London (TfL), it has been reported.According to Easier, car manufacturer Ford has urged van drivers using their vehicles to support the TfL's Share the Road campaign by displaying signs warning cyclists not to undertake.
The body added that there are thousands of accidents each year involving people on bikes looking to undertake much larger vehicles, which may in turn compromise van insurance policies.
And Chris Woodmore, Ford's Transport Operations manager, has expressed his delight at being involved in the initiative.
"Ford trailers travel more than 10 million miles every year and present an ideal opportunity to get this message across to cyclists where it will be noticed," he said.
Yesterday marked the tenth anniversary of the coinage of the phrase white van man.
The moniker has been attributed to Radio 2 DJ Sarah Kennedy.
