20 April 2007 Employers facing action for not stopping drivers on phones
Business managers may not be aware that they could be faced with liability if an employee of theirs is caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel, it has been stated.Under new regulations from the Department for Transport, bosses may face fines and a court appearance if this were to occur.
However, this need not be the case if they were to issue their staff with hands-free kits - as they may be less likely to be pulled up by police for not being in control of their vehicle.
And Simon Homer, the managing director of fleet management and contract hire company Covase, has highlighted the problem.
"Business owners may not be aware that illegal mobile phone use by employees could result in the company being held responsible for illegal phone use whilst driving," he said.
Car insurance customers may want to take this opportunity to remind themselves of the risks involved in using a handheld phone on the road.
The habit can risk lives and also see them face a £60 fine or a three point licence penalty.
