19 April 2007 Calls made to clarify working time driving rules

Motorists have urged the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) to clear up their confusion over new driving time regulations, it has been reported.

The new stipulations state that people who drive as part of their job must take a 45 minute break for every four hours they are on the road - a necessary step to avoid fatigue and accidents which could invalidate a car or van insurance policy.

But Commercial Motor has reported that drivers are struggling with when to interrupt their work.

And one driver told the body that the instructions over when to take a break are confusing and a "minefield for drivers".

Such an act may cut the number of road deaths that occur in the UK.

In 2005, Department for Transport figures show that 3,201 people were killed in traffic accidents, with a proportion being people who were working at the time.
