19 April 2007 Learner drivers should be 'given a year'

Learner drivers in London should have to complete a year of driving lessons before taking to the road on their own, an insurance body has claimed.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) stated their intent to protect new drivers at a meeting with members of parliament yesterday, according to Easier.

Along with the longer learning time, the group would like to see a more structured programme introduced, as well as a restriction on the number of passengers motorists can carry during their first six months of active road usage.

"Too many young drivers pass their test, but are unprepared for the hazards of driving on London’s roads. This lack of experience too often leads to tragedy," said Justin Jacobs, the ABI's head of motor insurance.

Yesterday, the Manchester Evening News reported that the mother of a girl killed in a car accident has back a road safety campaign.

Helen Evans is backing Brake to introduce the Graduated Driver Licensing system.
