17 April 2007 Road pricing - 10 years to implement

If the government's controversial road pricing scheme comes into being, it will take ten years to implement, according to a political advisor.

The Reading Chronicle has reported that Sir Rod Eddington has told the House of Commons transport committee that there are data issues to be dealt with before the system can be introduced.

What to do with the information collected by the technology is a concern, as is the price to drivers, it added, which may be too much for some drivers already paying road tax and car insurance prices.

And Sir Rod has claimed the ten year estimate is optimistic.

"To introduce widespread schemes you will need to tackle both of those problems," he said.

In the wake of the unveiling of road pricing plans, the 10 Downing Street website received a petition signed by 1.8 million people.
