17 April 2007 Speedy van drivers warned to slow down
People who decide to rent a van may be unwittingly breaking the speed limit, it has been claimed.According to the Scotsman, the Scottish Safety Camera Programme (SSCP) has reiterated the fact that some roads enforce lower speed limits for drivers in bigger vehicles, van insurance customers may be interested to know.
It added that research from the Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership shows that nearly three-quarters of motorists are unaware of this fact and may consequently be involved in an accident or be stopped by the police.
And Jim Dale, the director of the SSCP, believes that the lack of awareness comes from inexperience behind the wheel of larger vehicles.
"The problem stems from the fact that such vehicles can be driven with a car licence without specific training," he said.
Research from the Department for Transport has found that a third of road accidents in 2005 occurred while the drivers were working.
