16 April 2007 Pro-road pricing drivers to be 'rewarded'

Motorists who help the government test its controversial road pricing policy will be offered incentives, it has been revealed.

According to the Times, officials are looking to make the system financially viable to drivers by giving them a choice: pay higher taxes or install a black box which may cut costs.

Furthermore, car insurance customers may be interested to know that they may be given discounts on fuel duty by agreeing to be taxed by the mile.

This would see drivers being taxed less for travelling on less-congested roads, it added.

A similar experiment which took place in Seattle in the US found that nearly 80 per cent of subjects made fewer car journeys in areas of high congestion when a financial reward was on offer.

Earlier this year, a petition on the Downing Street website saw 1.8 million people sign up against road pricing proposals.
