13 April 2007 Mobile phone usage linked to business drivers

Around 25 per cent of people working in small companies are still using mobile phones behind the wheel, it has been reported.

Research from Bibby Financial Services found that 22 per cent of the bosses of small companies admitted to the crime - which now carries a £60 fine and a three-point licence penalty.

A conviction may also compromise a car insurance policy.

Similarly, 28 per cent commented that they eat while they drive, which may cause further distraction, it added.

The company claimed that in London, 75 per cent admitted to the acts, whereas chiefs in the north of England do it to the tune of 38 per cent.

"To avoid accidents, fines or loss of licences, it's clear from our survey that some managers still need to change their driving habits for the better," said Bibby Financial Services chief executive David Robertson.

Figures from the Department for Transport have reported that 3,201 people died on roads in the UK during 2005.
