13 April 2007 Hands-free 'ignored by motorists'

More than two-thirds of motorists still do not have a hands-free kit, according to new research.

Motorpoint surveyed 3,500 people and found that 69 per cent were still without the equipment, despite new laws in place against the handheld use of phones behind the wheel.

The body calculated that the combined cost of the fines these people stand to receive is around £210,000 and 10,500 points on a driving licence.

And the company highlighted the importance of keeping both hands on the wheel when driving - something which may keep a car insurance no-claims bonus in-tact.

"It is not only the customer’s responsibility to ensure that they do not break the law, but it is also that of Motorpoint's to ensure that we have informed customers," said Gary Warren, managing director of the company.

The new legislation against handheld phone use came into effect on February 27th 2007.
