12 April 2007 Driver phone offences drop in Worcestershire

The number of drivers caught behind the wheel in Worcestershire while using their mobile phone has been cut, according to reports.

A report in the Worcester News has claimed that the introduction of new penalties motorists can receive in the event of a conviction has lead to the reduction.

Since February 27th 2007, offending motorists can pick up a £60 fine and three points on their licence. This in turn can compromise a future car insurance policy.

While the West Mercia Constabulary is delighted with the drop, casualty reduction manager Sergeant John Roberts believes more can still be done.

"Our advice to drivers is save yourself £60 and reduce your chances of becoming involved in a potentially fatal collision by switching your mobile off when you get into your vehicle," he said.

Statistics from the Department for Transport show that 3,201 people died on roads in the UK in 2005.
