10 April 2007 Blue badge abusers to be targeted

An undercover police sting operation has seen police in Bolton catch a group of parking cheats, according to a local news provider.

The Bolton News has reported that 44 people were caught parking illegal in the regions largest ever crackdown on the crime.

Fraudulent use of a blue badge – which enables drivers to use disabled parking spaces – can results in a £1,000 court fine.

On top of this, such drivers may find it difficult to pick up a cheap car insurance quote.

And the news body added that of all the cheats picked up by police, the badge was owned by a friend or relative of the motorist.

"It would appear that the abuse is widespread and transcends all ages, genders and professions," said Inspector Phil Unsworth of Bolton Police.

Meanwhile, the Bolton branch of the Institute of Advanced Motorists has criticized the standard of private hire driving in the area, claiming that many dodge gatsos and ignore speed limits.
