04 April 2007 Motorists "dangerous" if they have poor vision
Drivers may be at risk if people are getting behind-the-wheel with visual impairments, according to research.Specsavers, in conjunction with DrivingServices UK, found that six per cent of traffic collisions may be down to people who have problems with their sight, Personnel Today has reported.
The study also found that eight per cent of people admitted that they could not see in the dark, it added.
Such an accident could have some serious implications on a car insurance policy.
But despite these figures, the body also revealed that 99 per cent of those surveyed were not coerced into taking eye tests by their employers - something that has been criticised by Louise Cole, deputy editor of Commercial Motor.
"Good vision is such an important safety consideration for all drivers that no employer who expects staff to drive in a professional capacity can afford to neglect regular eye tests," she said.
According to Department for Transport figures, 3,201 people died in traffic collisions in 2005.
