30 March 2007 Mobile use poses job threat to drivers
People who drive for a living may find their jobs compromised if they are caught using their phone while on the road, it has been claimed.Traffic commissioner Beverley Bell would like the details of heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers and bus drivers passed on to her if they are convicted of the offence, according to the Manchester Evening News.
This means that people committing the crime may face further punishment on top of fines, licence points and potential difficulties regarding their van insurance policy.
And Steve Brougham, spokesman for the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, added that the minority who flout the law will be punished.
"We are sending a very clear message to professional drivers - act like professionals. Drive safely and obey the law," he said.
The Department for Transport introduced the new legislation on February 27th 2007.
