29 March 2007 Marriage 'can affect home insurance'

Home insurance policies may be being neglected in the event of a couple getting married, it has been suggested.

Some house contents may be left under-insured as it is a common practice among insurance companies to automatically increase a premium after marriage, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

The company has claimed that they suspect there is a large amount of under-insurance in the UK, with a spokesperson suggesting a ten per cent increase occurs in the month after the vows have been taken.

"The exact percentage rise will depend on the policy of course," said Malcolm Tarling.

Mr Tarling added that the problem could be averted simply by "making sure your insurers know".

One couple who may be keeping an eye on their contents cover are Liz Hurley and Arun Nayar.

The actress recently married the wealthy businessman in a secret ceremony earlier this month.
