29 March 2007 Women 'at more risk' when buying a used car

When it comes to buying a used car, women could be getting a raw deal, according to a global information solutions company.

Discrepancies between the sexes may exist when it comes to car insurance - quotes may often be based on gender - but Experian has reported that the fairer sex are less likely to check a second-hand vehicle's status before buying it.

The company also found that women were more likely to purchase an older car, usually three years old and from a private individual.

According to Kirk Fletcher, sales director at the body's automotive division, the differences boil down to men being more technically-minded when looking for a new car and women looking to find a bargain.

"Women… may be swayed more by what they consider a bargain. Men, on the other hand, place more importance on make, model and brand," he said.

Research from the Civil Service Motoring Association has found that 56 per cent of female drivers do not enjoy being on the road and find it stressful, according to CARkeys.
