28 March 2007 Drivers 'failing to prioritise tyre changes'
Around a quarter of drivers on UK roads has admitted to driving on tyres below the legal minimum tread depth, Kwik-Fit has revealed. The main excuse among motorists choosing not to change them is that they are too busy - something the organisation has claimed can risk lives.
Similarly, an accident while driving a car with inefficient tyres can seriously harm a car insurance no-claims policy.
And with the Easter bank holiday weekend approaching, a time when families may be looking to hit the road for a short holiday, the motor maintenance company has cited the importance of checking wheels.
"Driving excessively worn tyres places [drivers], their passengers and other road users at considerable risk, particularly in wet weather," said David White, customer services director at Kwik-Fit.
Department for Transport figures show that over 3,000 fatalities occurred on roads in the UK during 2005.
