28 March 2007 Chancellor 'persecuting drivers'
Some motorists are claiming that Gordon Brown is persecuting them in the wake of road tax increases, according to a regional news provider. In this year's Budget, it was announced that people driving cars which emit the highest amounts of carbon will see their vehicle excise duty bill increase by £90 to £300 this year - while those in eco-friendly vehicles will gain discounts on tax and possibly car insurance.
This has left those behind the wheels of 4x4s and sports cars unhappy, the Bromley Times has reported.
Roger Lawson, a member of the Bromley Borough Road Action Group, criticised the move.
"It's pretty unreasonable being taxed more than the relative proportion of emissions… if a family has two cars [creating more emissions] they would still pay less than a 4x4 driver," he said.
As part of his address last week Mr Brown also increased fuel costs by 3.8p over two years.
