27 March 2007 New driving laws 'have snared a dirty dozen a day'

Over a dozen Hampshire drivers have been caught each day since the introduction of new legislation regarding the use of hand-held mobile phones behind the wheel, a local news provider has reported.

On February 27th, the sanctions meant that people caught using the devices on the road would be fined £60 and penalised three licence points - something which may compromise a car insurance policy.

Since the laws came in, Hampshire News has reported that 331 drivers have been punished in this way - 73 in the first week, according to the Daily Echo.

However, Hampshire police have commented that the figure is roughly the same as in an average week before the changes were made, Hampshire News added.

It is thought that the action could help reduce the number of road deaths reported in the UK.

Each year, 3,201 people die in car accidents in Britain.
