26 March 2007 The lemon-scented smell of successful driving
A citrus-smelling vehicle could see drivers making savings on their car insurance policies, according to new research. The aroma, typically derived from lemons, limes and oranges, can help drivers keep alert and concentrate while on the road, a Middlesex University study has found.
More specifically, the subjects could direct their driving more effectively, position their car well and respond with more accuracy to verbal instructions.
Some 30 men and 30 women drivers used a computer console driving simulation during the experiment, with scientists discovering that the smell had a positive effect on their motoring skills.
"The results show that drivers dangling air fresheners may do more than scent a car," Neil Martin of the University told the British Psychological Society.
The discovery may lead to a reduction in road deaths, with 3,201 having been reported by the Department for Transport in 2005.
