23 March 2007 Cost of carbon cuts calculated

Scotland would need to reduce the number of cars on its roads in order to meet government targets on climate change, according to new calculations published.

The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) looked at climate change across the country and declared that it would need to reduce vehicle numbers in Edinburgh by 35 per cent by 2050 in order to remain on track.

This equates to 57,500 fewer vehicles, car insurancecustomers in the area may be interested to know.

Similarly, 1,344 wind turbines would be required to power Glasgow, it added, while the current growth rate in Inverness means the city would have to make every building energy efficient in order to meet the targets.

"The built environment affects every aspect of the way we live and work and therefore commands a huge influence over carbon emissions and climate change," said Graeme Hartley, director of Rics Scotland.

Chancellor Gordon Brown's 11th Budget this week saw him double the amount of road tax for drivers of high-polluting vehicles to £400.
