22 March 2007 Anti-drink-driving device hits UK
Machinery which could potentially save a driver's life as well as his car insurance policy has gone on sale in Cambridge, a local news provider has reported. The Alcolock is a Home Office-approved piece of equipment which combines a breathalyser and an immobiliser - preventing those over the legal alcohol limit from driving their car, Cambridge News has stated.
According to the company, the product has proved popular and is used with increasing regularity across Sweden and North America, so much so that the countries' respective governments are looking to draft in legislation by 2012 making the machinery compulsory.
And David Whittock, the managing director of AlcolockGB, the business behind the product, called the piece of kit unique and essential for responsible car owners.
"Well-intentioned individuals can now buy a product which effectively prevents drink-driving," he said.
Figures from the Department for Transport show that 3,201 people died on UK roads during 2005.
