22 March 2007 Motorways 'six times safer than home roads'

Drivers are six times more likely to compromise their car insurance policy on a road closer to home than they are on the motorway, according to new research.

The consumer finance company moneysupermarket.com has found that close to one in three crashes are close to home, with single-track roads and lanes also common collision sites.

While A-roads and dual carriageways have been proven to be a problem for 23 per cent of drivers, 25 per cent have had trouble on the smaller routes.

Furthermore, the body found car parks to be more of a risk than motorways, where one in twenty has experienced a crash.

"Motorists become complacent when navigating familiar routes, often leading to costly prangs and resulting insurance claims," said Richard Mason, managing director of insurance for the company.

Meanwhile, certain signals have been found to help prevent traffic collisions in a study from Oxford University's Department of Experimental Psychology.

Findings suggested vibrated seatbelts could prevent one in seven crashes.
