20 March 2007 Drug drivers "escaping justice"

Drug drivers in Tayside are evading the long arm of the law because there is no scientific roadside test conducted in order to catch them out.

This is the opinion of chief constable John Vine, Tayside's most senior police officer, who commented that the lack of resources available in order to catch offenders was "frightening", the Courier has reported.

Car insurance customers may be aware that a drug driving conviction can affect their cover policy and future premiums, but Mr Vine has called the methods on offer to protect drivers and enforce the law "very limited".

Currently, the only test carried out on a suspect is a blood test taken at the police station. A roadside alternative is not available, the officer pointed out.

"We know that some offenders are escaping justice because there is no scientific test capable of catching drivers under the influence of drugs," Mr Vine commented.

Department for Transport statistics show that 3,201 people died on Britain's roads in 2005.
