19 March 2007 Gas-guzzlers 'high on budget agenda'
The Chancellor of the Exchequer will hit the drivers of gas-guzzlers in the pocket in Wednesday's Budget, it has been claimed. It is expected that Gordon Brown will increase road tax on 4x4s and sports cars from £210 to £400 over the next two years, according to the Sun and the Times.
The moves is expected to be one of many environmentally-friendly announcements made by Mr Brown and is likely to please green campaigners - if not car insurance customers who drive such vehicles.
A Friends of the Earth economics campaigner Dave Timms has said that the chancellor needed to address such issues in his 11th - and possibly final - Budget address.
According to the activist, climate change needs to be at the "heart" of economic plans, rather than "[tinkering] in the margins".
The World Development Movement has reported that the north-east of England emits the most CO2 in the UK - 34 million tonnes per year.
