19 March 2007 Older population 'need insurance assurance'

Insurance providers need to make sure that they are providing policies and premiums for older people, a new report has suggested.

A study from Age Concern and Help the Aged has revealed that a quarter of people over 75 and a fifth of people over 65 were unable to receive a quote, whereas this happened only once in 33 times for customers aged 30 to 49.

Meanwhile, the number of pensioners looking for car insurance is expected to rise, with the study claiming that elderly people with driving licences will more than double by 2050.

Currently, a third of those over 70 have a premium, while one in eight over 90 hold car insurance cover.

"Older people find it harder to access insurance and are less likely to shop around for alternative products," commented David Sinclair, senior policy manager for Help the Aged.

A recent study from uSwitch.com found Manchester to be the city in which the largest numbers of people take to the road without car insurance.
