16 March 2007 New speeding initiative sees offenders face children
Motorists caught speeding in the Lancashire area have been made to come face-to-face with local children in order to face the consequences of their dangerous behaviour - and potentially control their car insurance. The new scheme sees drivers, caught between 30 and 35 mph by police in Lowerhouse, choose whether they would like to pay a fine for their offence or be quizzed by a panel of local schoolchildren, according to the Burnley Express.
However, those who were found to be driving at more than 35 mph were given a fine and penalty points, it added.
This comes as part of a new road safety initiative in the area, coordinated by community beat manager PC Ian Pudge, police community support officer Michelle Horne and staff and pupils at Lowerhouse Primary School.
"The children, with help from their teachers, put question to the motorists, asking them why they speed past the school," said Ms Horne.
Meanwhile, the York Press newspaper has reported that road safety projects in York will be given £250,000 in investments in 2007/08.
